WQLRA and Placement Information 2023-2024

The Williams Quantitative Literacy and Reasoning Assessment (WQLRA) is required of all students.  This assessment is NOT an exam and is located in GLOW.  Your results will simply help us advise you on paths to completing Williams' Quantitative and Formal Reasoning requirement and explore your desired major.

 

Online Placement Information
Biology required to place out of Biology 101 and/or Biology 102. In-person Placement Session is on Tuesday, September 5, 1:00pm-3:00pm

Computer Science required by those without a 4 or 5 on the AP Computer Science A exam who wish to place out of CSCI 134. Computer Science Placement Information
Chinese required to continue Chinese language begun in high school. Students can self-enroll in the online GLOW Chinese evaluation site and follow the instructions there.

In-person interview sessions on Monday, Sept. 4th, 3:30-5:30 pm.

French If you’ve ever studied French before, you must take the French Placement Test. Sign up (with the online form) by August 1.

Economics  This assessment is only for those with prior background in economics, such as high school courses, AP or IB exams, and so on. If you have any prior economics background, you must complete the assessment.  Please complete it before August 5. The assessment is available now; please check our website, https://econ.williams.edu/placement/, for more information about the assessment and how to access it. Those with no prior economics background do NOT need to take the assessment. For any questions, please contact the placement chair, Professor Matthew Chao, at [email protected].
Ballet Placement Class  
In the Fall semester, three levels of ballet technique will be offered:  Beginner (Tu/Tr, 9:55-11:10; Intermediate (Tu/Tr 11:20-12:35)
and Advanced (Mon/Wed 11:00-12:15).  Beginner students do NOT need to be placed.  The placement class is mandatory for Intermediate or Advanced dancers who wish to place out of the Beginner level. All levels may be taken for 2 PE credits or for partial academic credit (note: partial academic credit doesn’t go toward your required number for graduation, but it does appear on your final transcript).  For students in either level who wish to receive FULL academic credit, see DANC 105 BFF! (Ballet Film Festival!) in the course catalog for more information; note that participants in DANC 105 also meet a 3rd time, Wednesdays 1:10-3:50; Advanced students have another FULL academic credit option, see DANC 305 Advanced Ballet Technique and Performance in the course catalog for more information; note that participants in DANC 305 meet MWF 11:00-12:50.
The placement class will be held on Monday, September 4 from 3:30-4:45  in the ’62 Center for Theatre and Dance dance studio, on the second floor.

Chemistry Chemistry Placement Survey Information
Due July 14
Spanish required to continue Spanish language begun in high school.
All students who have taken one or more years of Spanish, or have experience with the language in other forms, should take the test to ensure correct placement in classes. You can self-enroll via Glow here:   https://glow.williams.edu/enroll/REJ6KW
The test is now open and remain open through Thursday August 31 at 6 p.m. However you are encouraged to take it sooner rather than later.
